North American Studies

North American Studies is a Master of Arts programme at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies (JFKI) of Freie Universität Berlin, taught exclusively in English with no German language requirement. It focuses on historical developments, structures and institutions in North America, analysed in their cultural, economic, literary, political and social contexts. Students gain in-depth knowledge across six disciplines - politics, sociology, literature, economics, culture and history - choose two areas of concentration, and take compulsory interdisciplinary courses on current research topics concerning the US and Canada. Admission requires a bachelor's degree in one of these or a related interdisciplinary subject with at least 90 credit points, plus English at C1 level; students pay no tuition fees, only a semester fee of about 300 euros that includes free public transit.
