Ottoman and Turkish Studies

Ottoman and Turkish Studies is a Master of Arts programme at the Institute of Ottoman Studies and Turcology of Freie Universität Berlin focusing on the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey. Students receive training in academic working practices and critically engage with the contexts, theories and methods of the field, while gaining knowledge of Turkish and Ottoman languages and an overview of Ottoman and Turkish history and culture. Advanced topics include pre-modern statehood and social organisation, modernisation under conditions of global interdependence, approaches to plurality and diversity, and gender as a social and cultural category. Applicants need a relevant bachelor's degree, Turkish at B2 level and English at C1 level unless previously studied in those languages; the programme is tuition-free apart from semester contributions.
