Digital Studies of Ancient Texts

Digital Studies of Ancient Texts (DISTANT) is an interdisciplinary, English-taught Master of Arts programme offered by the Institutes of Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Egyptology together with the Professorship for Computer Philology and Data Science of the Languages of the Ancient World at Freie Universität Berlin. Its distinctive profile lies in combining linguistic-philological topics from Ancient Studies with questions and methods of the Digital Humanities. Students work with texts and languages of the ancient world such as Akkadian, Ancient Egyptian, Coptic, Hittite and Sumerian, and acquire a versatile, up-to-date skill set relevant to a variety of academic and professional contexts. Applicants need a first degree with at least 180 ECTS, including 60 ECTS in Classical Studies and/or Digital Humanities, of which at least 25 ECTS must prove language skills in one of the ancient languages taught, plus English at C1 level.
